UN – Human Rights Council

Gilles Tonelli, Government Counselor-Minister of External Relations and Cooperation, visited the headquarters of the United Nations Office in Geneva on 12 November 2018 to attend the 3rd Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Principality.

On this occasion, the Government Councilor presented the national report of the Principality and answered questions from member and observer states of the UN Human Rights Council. To this end, he was supported by a delegation of 18 persons, including the Director of Judicial Services, Laurent Anselmi, the Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations Office at Geneva, S.E. Mrs Carole Lanteri and the President of the Commission of External Relations of the National Council, José Badia.

This exercise made it possible to reiterate the commitment of the Monegasque authorities to the promotion and protection of human rights and to report on the progress made in this area since the previous UPR.

This process, the preparation of which mobilized many State services, will conclude with the adoption of a report on the occasion of the 40th session of the Human Rights Council (25 February to 22 March 2019).

This document will reflect in particular the positioning adopted by the Prince’s Government on each of the recommendations made.

For the record, the UPR is a mechanism set up in 2006 within the framework of the UN Human Rights Council, in which member states and observers of the Council examine the policy of their peers in the field of human rights, man and formulate recommendations against them with a view to strengthening it. All UN member states submit to it, every 5 years.
