UN Monaco participates in the Commission on the situation of refugees

On 1 November 2018, as part of the work of the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, on the situation of refugees, S.E. Isabelle Picco, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations, recalled that Monaco has been cooperating with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 1956, when the Prince’s Government ratified the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees of 28 July 1951 and provides it with annual financial support since 1961.

In 2016, Monaco became the fifth largest contributor to UNHCR per capita.  

The Permanent Representative also mentioned that the reception in Monaco of several refugee families, as well as the preventive actions carried out by the Directorate of International Cooperation, through which nearly 80,000 refugees benefited from direct support in areas of health, nutrition, education and employment.

In her conclusion, S.E. Isabelle Picco assured that the Principality of Monaco strongly supports the framework of international cooperation instituted by the global pact on refugees, which should allow host countries and communities to receive rapid, sustainable and predictable support.
