This past Sunday, AS Monaco announced the arrival of Gelson Martins. On loan from Atletico Madrid until the end of the season, the Portuguese player becomes the fifth recruit of the winter mercato.
The operation to reinforce their ranks with fresh talent continues for AS Monaco. The news came in this past Sunday afternoon, the day after the team’s latest loss to FC Dijon. After Naldo, Ballo-Toure, Fabregas, and Vainqueur, it is now Gelson Martins’ turn to join the Monegasque group. At the age of 23, the young attacking midfielder who came up through the youth program at the Sporting Clube Lisbon, and has played for Atletico since the start of the season. Due to his lack of playing time at Atletico, (played 8 times by Simeone), it was announced, his departure has been expected since early January.
This is the first time Gelson Martins will discover the French league championship, the third national championship of his young career. Indeed, after 3 years in Lisbon at Sporting, he flew to the Iberian neighbor to join La Liga. His engagement to Atletico runs until 2023, yet the young talent is headed to reinforce Monaco just 6 months after his arrival with the Madrilenians. The native of Praia said he was “very happy to arrive at AS Monaco”, adding “he was eager to get back on the pitch with my new teammates and do my best to help the team.”
