Most popular baby names of 2019 in Monaco

The Monaco City Council released the latest civil status figures revealing the most popular names in Monaco and other statistics about births, deaths and marriages that took place in the Principality. Monaco’s oldest civil service register dates back to the 16th century.

 

In 2019, it recorded 939 births – 494 boys and 445 girls – that took place at the Princess Grace Hospital Maternity Centre. Out of these births, 472 babies came from marital union while 467 babies were born out of wedlock. When it came to choosing baby names, some parents got original. Top 5 baby girl names 

 

Charlotte – a diminutive of Charles. It is of French origin meaning “free man” or “petite”. The name dates back to at least the 14th  century. It is now wonder that Charlotte is the top name in 2019 – Charlotte Casiraghi married Dimitri Rassam on 1 June 2019.

Valentina – a feminine form of the Roman name Valentinus, which is derived from the Latin word “valens” meaning “healthy, strong”.

Jade – The name is derived from the Spanish piedra de la ijada, which means “stone of the colic.” There was a belief that when jade was placed on the stomach, it could cure colic in babies.

Victoria – the Latin word for “victory.” In Roman mythology, Victoria was the name of the goddess of victory.

Mila – is a name of Slavic origin derived from the element Mil meaning “gracious” or “dear”.
