AS Monaco present new jerseys in tribute to Princess Grace
Monaco’s football club presented its home outfit for the 2020-21 season. It is set to honour the design thought up by Princess Grace sixty years ago.
Developed with the Italian manufacturer Kappa, AS Monaco’s new jersey, “as iconic as it is timeless”, now has an “elegant diagonal” splitting up the front of the shirt, red on the heart side and white at the bottom, as well as white sleeves. On the sides, the edging is gold to recall “the prestige of the Principality’s club”. The most special touch is found on the inside of the jersey, bearing the words “Jersey created by Princess Grace. 1960-2020.”
Princess Grace’s unique design
On the 90th anniversary of Princess Grace of Monaco’s birth, the Rock’s treasured club wanted to pay tribute to the woman who designed the mythical red and white diagonal jersey. Founded in 1924, the club had a long journey with its colours before eventually adopting the red and white of the House of Grimaldi in Genoa. It was in 1960, in the wake of the first French Cup, that the team’s outfit was redesigned by the Princess. Instead of red and white vertical stripes, she crafted the diagonal design.
Appearing for the first time during the 1960-1961 season, this unique design on the jersey brought the team luck, as they would go on to win the French championship title for the first time. “It didn’t take much more than that for the diagonal to be definitively adopted and to become a major element of our club’s identity over time, helped by their sporting success,” explained AS Monaco.
