At the end of the 1970s, the rivalry between the two tennis players Björn Borg and John McEnroe was intense. The Swede’s calmness and experience contrasted with the American’s fiery and explosive character. Björn Borg, then number one in the world, was a world superstar, while McEnroe was heavily criticised for his attitude and language on the court. Despite the unwavering support of his fiancée Mariana Simionescu and his coach Lennart Bergelin, Borg was filled with doubts about going for a fifth straight title at Wimbledon 1980. The rivalry between the two men reached its peak in the final of the tournament on 5 July 1980.
