When she married Rainier in 1956, the actress Grace Kelly thought she had found Prince Charming, but the union was a Vatican staged affair. She had become the princess of “a heartless kingdom”, as the priest Francis Tucker, the princely couple’s confidant, reveals, a sham principality whose inhabitants are the naive rabble. Six years later, the disillusioned and homesick princess wants a divorce. Her “brittle and macho” husband is often absent, the couple are in separate rooms, she is surrounded by court intrigues and can no longer stand the strict protocol of her “golden cage”.
