Bates is a businessman, football executive and hotelier. He was involved in creating the Premier League as well as in the development of Wembley Stadium.
He is the former owner of Chelsea and Leeds United, which, in 1982, he purchased for £1. His work with Chelsea led to their first major wins in 30 years.
He made his personal fortune in the haulage and quarrying industries. He currently lives in Monaco with wife Suzannah and his five children.
