The Sports Society is one of the first in the Principality. It came from the initiative of Coach Jules Prat, and was authorised by decree of his Excellency the General Governor of Monaco, on 9th June 1909. Its purpose? To encourage, facilitate facilitate and to develop, by the practice, the sports of combat in general and mainly the fencing, pistol shooting, cane, kickboxing, stick… Acting on this desire, the first major international fencing tournament was organised on 10 and 11 March 1910 under the name of “Challenge d’Épée de Monaco” and under the High Patronage of the Festivities Committee and with the gracious assistance of the Société des Bains de Mer. Since then, many important regional, national and international tournaments have taken place.

The club has participated several times in championships held in the French Riviera, Provence, France and Europe. During the world championships, some of their shooters reached the fencing semi-final in Paris in 1937. Who was on the team? MM. Fernand and Louis Prat, Gaubert, Bremond and Viale. In 2009, the Club celebrated its centenary in the presence of Prince Albert II and the main Monégasque Authorities at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco. On this occasion, a member of the Club, Mr Fernand PRAT (junior) presented a preview of the design for a new fencing handle to the Sovereign. The design, named “Poignée PRAT”, was approved for sabre fencing a few months later by the International Fencing Federation.
